Do police check speed on motorway?
These are among the most distinctive motorway cameras: often, a police car or van will be parked on a bridge over a motorway; officers within will detect speeding motorists either with a radar or laser gun, or with video speed monitoring technology.
Is it illegal to go over 80 mph on a motorway?
Just wondering how cops and speed cameras consider 80 mph on motorway as an offence! The normal prosecution threshold is 10% + 2mph ie 79 mph. If you are doing an indicated 80 you’re probably only really doing 75 ish.
Why was the 70mph speed limit put in place?
The 70mph speed limit on motorways was introduced in 1965 because of the high number of collisions caused by drivers going as fast as they liked. The 70mph limit is the front line of motorway safety, the importance of which is underlined by heavier penalties for speeding than on other roads. Maximum speeding fines, in general, can be up to £1,000.
Can a speed camera Catch you at 80 mph?
I have done 20000 miles already this year virtually all on the motorway (usually a 20 mile a day motorway commute and one day a week a 240 mile commute to another office). A speed camera will generally catch you at 79 true speed (sometimes lower) so 85 indicated is probably pushing it a little bit.
What is the penalty for going over the speed limit?
Minor Speeding Offences – Usually dealt with via a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN), 3 points & £100 fine or you may be offered a speed awareness course, or you can elect to defend the alleged offence in court. Serious Speeding Offences – Normally defined as 20 mph or more over the speed limit.

Can a police car stop you for 79 mph?
Probably not . I doubt a police car would stop you , but you might get done by a camera van ( I was done for 79 mph on the motorway by a camera several years ago . But it was in the Lake District so it was probably just to fill their coffers for flood defences so I didn’t mind ). So to avoid doubt – either do 70 mph or 95 mph+ .
