When applying to become a Police Officer, you must declare any cautions, investigations or criminal convictions that may be linked to you, a family member or someone you know. If you don’t tell us at this stage, your application could be refused simply because you weren’t being open and up front.
Can a family member be a police officer?
If you have a relative that doesn’t live with you that has a criminal past then it’s not an automatic end to your application. I know of a couple of cops who have relatives who’ve committed crimes in the past and they’re in the job.

Everyone has freedom of speech, except police officers. You have a right to speak freely, you just don’t have a right to be a cop. I.e.: A staunch Irish Catholic can agree with the Catholic Church and be anti-abortion.

Can you be a police officer with a misdemeanor?
Having a misdemeanor conviction on your criminal background won’t necessarily disqualify you from the hiring process, but it will put you at a disadvantage with other applicants who have squeaky clean records. I’d recommend that you disclose the conviction on your initial job application even if you’ve gotten it expunged from your record.
